The flight from Buenos Aires to London, with a quick stop in São Paulo, was quite enjoyable as I had entertaining neighbours and could catch some sleep. We were woken up at 5am by the smell of a full English breakfast. Shortly after this meal we arrived at London Heathrow Airport and I took the Tube (Subway) into the centre to collect house keys from Donald, an ex colleague who had very kindly offered me to stay at his place for the two nights. I spent the following two days in London with drinking coffee with friends & former colleagues, Christmas shopping and having a few pints and good food in the evenings.
It felt a bit strange being back in London after a year of travelling around the world but I enjoyed having some time to see places I like and catching up with friends. Donald was a great host and I was able to have two good nights sleep in my own bedroom without any annoying hostel noises.
After just 2.5 days in London I took an afternoon Eurostar train to Paris to spend one night there before returning to Switzerland the next morning. There wasn’t time to see much of Paris and I had to update the Blog because everyone might stop reading it once I arrive back in Basel…
So that basically was it – Almost one year of travelling through 17 countries (some like England & France only for 1-2 nights). I have spent an incredible amount of time getting to the different places – here some final statistics:
Buses (not including organised tours) – 417 hours
Trains – 101 hours
Boats – 119 hours
Planes – 85 hours
You don’t need to do the calculations: the total of 722 hours equals 30 days and nights of travelling between places. But then some of the trips have been very enjoyable like the slow boat down the Mekong river in Laos, some bus journeys through breathtaking scenery or the Navimag boat trip down to Patagonia.
I have had the privilege of being able to see some of the most beautiful regions of this planet, enjoyed interaction with locals wherever I had the chance to meet them and I got to know so many other travellers with whom I spent between one hour and more than four weeks of my trip. Some of them I can call real friends now and I’m looking forward to meeting them again in future - that alone has made the whole trip worth doing.
As to the future of this blog: Some people have asked me to continue writing entries in future but the idea of the blog always was to publish updates of my round the world trip 2009/2010. Hence there won’t be any more regular updates in future; a last entry after my return to Switzerland might follow in a week or two.
A very big THANK YOU to all of you for reading, commenting and recommending this Blog - I have been touched by how many people actually read the entries! Thanks to everyone who contributed in any way to making this trip so special for me - be it support from back home or during the trip, like bringing me breakfast or a nice little get-well-soon-card to the hostel room when I was ill, inviting me to join your group of friends or showing me around a new place although you have seen it many times before - this really made my trip a lot more enjoyable!
Have a lovely Christmas wherever you celebrate it or if you don't celebrate it, enjoy living, partying, travelling or planning for it!
